Two southern white rhinos grazing in tall grass at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: Is Rhino Tracking Worth Adding to Your Uganda Trip?

Know what rhino tracking at Ziwa involves, how much time it takes and why the sanctuary fits best on the road to Murchison Falls.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is Uganda's established place for ranger-led southern white rhino tracking, principally on foot. It offers a close, attentive wildlife experience rather than another game drive.

For most travellers, Ziwa belongs on the road north to Murchison Falls National Park. Used that way, it gives a long transfer day a purpose; as a same-day return from Kampala, the balance shifts heavily towards road time.

Include it for the walk and the conservation story—not simply to claim a guaranteed “Big Five” safari.

What rhino tracking is actually like

The ranger controls the experience. After a briefing, you may drive within the ranch to the area where the rhinos have been located, then continue on foot. The ranch says visitors normally use their own vehicle for that internal movement unless another vehicle is arranged beforehand.

This is not a long-distance trek, but heat, insects, wet or uneven ground and time standing can matter. The animals decide where to move and rest, so the route, distance, viewing angle and number of rhinos seen cannot be fixed in advance.

Experience

Four parts of the Ziwa experience

  1. A ranger-led walk

Listen to the safety briefing, move quietly and let the ranger decide how the group approaches. The point is careful observation, not forcing a closer photograph.

  2. A flexible search

The published tracking estimate is 1½–2½ hours because the rhinos' location shapes the outing. A sighting is a reasonable hope, never a mechanical guarantee.

  3. Time beyond the walk

Arrival, check-in, payment, briefing and possible driving inside the ranch sit outside the tracking estimate. Protect a half-day window in your Uganda safari plan.

  4. A change of safari pace

Ziwa adds ground-level tracking before Murchison's vehicle and boat experiences. That contrast is more valuable than simply adding a fifth animal to a list.

Does Ziwa fit your itinerary?

A good fit if…

  • You are travelling by road between Kampala or Entebbe and Murchison Falls.
  • You value a guided walking encounter more than a wildlife checklist.
  • You can protect a half-day window and still reach your next stop comfortably.
  • Rhino conservation is a genuine interest, not only a label on the itinerary.

Think twice if…

  • Your Murchison transfer already has a late start or a tight lodge-arrival plan.
  • Heat, insects or walking on uneven ground would make the activity uncomfortable.
  • Adding Ziwa would take time from the main experience you care about more.
  • You want guaranteed sightings, a fixed walking distance or a vehicle-only safari.

Ziwa + Murchison: the route decision

Ziwa and Murchison are separate places, but the Kampala–Gulu road makes them natural partners. The choice is whether to use Ziwa as part of that northbound journey or build a day around Ziwa alone.

Two ways to include Ziwa

Recommended

On the way to Murchison

Start early, track rhinos, then continue to the lodge. You gain walking, game-drive and Nile boat experiences across the trip, but day one needs firm timing; add a night if you prefer a slower pace.

A specialist choice

From Kampala and back

The ranch places itself about 176 kilometres north of Kampala. The return journey becomes a full, road-heavy day, worthwhile mainly when rhinos or conservation outrank what that day would displace.

Conservation and the “Big Five”

Uganda's indigenous eastern black and northern white rhinos were lost during decades of poaching and insecurity. A southern white rhino breeding programme began at Ziwa in 2005, and in 2026 the Uganda Wildlife Authority began moving rhinos from Ziwa into protected areas as part of a wider national restoration programme. Because births and translocations change the number at the sanctuary, an old fixed population count is not a reliable visitor fact.

On the common combined route, rhino tracking happens at Ziwa; travellers may look for lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo in Murchison. That creates the possibility of seeing all five across two protected areas, not a promise—particularly for elusive species such as leopard. The responsible reason to pair them is the range of walking, vehicle and boat experiences.

What to confirm before you go

If an operator includes Ziwa, also confirm the meal plan and expected Murchison lodge arrival. Independent travellers should use the ranch's current rhino-tracking information and booking and prices page rather than an old itinerary or saved screenshot.
